Geeks: a love story

In order to keep my mind fresh and interested in writing, even though I will never stop philosophizing, I decided to see how the world sees us the modern geek. We know how we see ourselves, just go to any ComicCon or Starbucks since so many of us don't use mirrors, but we know what everyone else looks like. Now not all of us are the best examples of what it is to be a geek/nerd, but there is one thing that remains true for every geek: you all love yourselves. You may not know how to feel about about many things, you probably don't care about what other people think, but one thing is for sure whatever you are you are proud of it and shut anyone down who tries to make fun of your hand made Chewbacca sports coat. Let that laughing looser see what it is like to stay up all night and hand stitch the lining so that all the girls at the comic book shop mistake you for Teen Wolf because your mom has been feeding you a low carb diet. No matter what, geeks really do love themselves, and will out craft anybody to prove this point. So when I called this a geek love story, I must apologize to all the people who thought that this was going to be about two star crossed lovers, it's not. It's about all the freaks and individualists who stand up every day telling the judgmental world to shove it because they are happy ignoring this judgmental world, they just love themselves.

While scrolling through internet images I was greatly confused by the modern media's interpretation of what a geek looks like and how they picked some of the weirdest distortions of what we really wear and look like. In the following picture they think we are fashion models who wear garbage can lid/pizza pans on our head while wearing Andy Worhol's pajamas. Clearly they did not make these garbage can lids to look like Millennium Falcons, and they should have used a fabric pattern that represented R2D2, 3CPO, or at least a Jedi robe. Also, I can't tell if the picture just has weird shadowing, but the models almost look dirty in that homeless kind of way, but even if a geek was homeless they would at least be wearing enough character makeup to not look homeless. This is not the self love that personifies modern geekdom.

Then as I was scrolling, they kept on showing me pictures of horned rimmed glasses, as if so long as you have over sized spectacles then you were automatically a geek. No test, no sample of crafting capability, no real proof that the glass was prescription. Then they had movie stars and other random skinny models dressing like normal people and the older version of Andy Worhol, and all were wearing horned rimmed glasses. I'm sure that not half of them even needed those glasses or that they even had glass in the frames. Also, only Diane Keaton and all old men from the same era as Andy Worhol dress like this.

This is not geek, these are girls dressed up like their middle-aged college professors and wearing their smart sister's glasses, the fat pimple covered sister who got into Yale. I know that so many of us own mirrors that we don't use because in modern times we have installed mirrors in every bathroom in America, but now even the modern world is missing the point of why we don't use these mirrors. We don't use them because we only like to look at each other. (Side note: mirrors are only used for applying body makeup for dress up, and to see if the pleating looks right on the back side of your new Dr. Who costume.)  It is an emotional roller coaster ride to stay on top of the personal expression climb, of who can be the nerd standing on the tallest peak of Geek mountain. People must envy our hand made Batman Rockabilly dress, and not whatever those girls in the previous picture are wearing.

https://www.etsy.com/listing/195396149/batman-comic-book-dress-measurements-in?ref=shop_home_active_4

Also there seems to be a misconception that geeks are plain dowdy creatures who dress like their grandfathers and college professors. This next picture proves that we can also be redneck hippies with gym memberships when we are not writing computer code, re-designing data systems, and programming microwave clocks for senior citizens. Just more proof we can get our play ON!

Also, in this search to be #1 self loving individual at the top of geek mountain, for all the things that we don't say, our clothing usually does most of our talking for us. We know that we are living in a world that is walking around with ear buds constantly in our ears, of course we know this we made this part of the world, and because of these anti-social behaviors that we love our clothing must speak for us, since we don't like actually talking to anyone that's isn't in a chat room.

http://geeknation.com/geek-fashion-geeky-bras/

Our unique collection of clothing tells the world what we want to say, since we are too socially awkward to ask you for your number so that we can text you about it. A few of us have broken through the mold and have built blogs with followers who have had constant contact with the outside world in a two way conversation, but the few cannot speak for the many. So our feelings, ideas, and personal desires are printed, sewn, and crafted onto our bodies and into our lives then we let our freak flags fly in the biggest gatherings where we know no one will look us in the eye: ComicCon.

This is what the world thinks we look like: a skinny model who is anorexic with good bone structure, black horn rimmed glasses (without the glass), a bow tie, and wears a color pallet that Martha Stewart would be proud of. I would not trust this guy to work in tech support and I don't think he chose these clothes for himself and really really don't think he made any part of this. This outfit doesn't even have any moving, flashing, or light up parts. So sad that the outside modern media thinks so much less of us compared to how much we think about ourselves. They have no idea how much time we put into looking like ourselves while this outfit looks like he took a five minute walk through the old man section at Macy's with Martha Stewart who believes that faded grape toned purples are in season.

         https://www.etsy.com/listing/259977519/light-up-hoodie-led-hoodie-with-el-wire?ref=market
       http://www.thestylishgeek.com/

Now these are people who I would trust working in tech support (they had to troubleshoot how to make those rockin' costumes, they know what hard work is, they can virus scan my computer any day they want...). They took the time to make these, means they have the patience of Yoda and will not have any problems finding the force....I mean online patch source for Windows. We all know they picked these items themselves and on purpose, and the guy even has real glass in his glasses. Even the girls light up the world with actual light and bright color without dressing like Andy Worhol. These are real geeks who obviously love themselves, now if only the real world would follow our lead and stop staring in the mirror so much and see what we really look like.

Friends With Benefits

Men Moving a Couch Up Stairs

When your co-workers find out that you own a vehicle that will fit the new love seat that they have to have inside of their own minds, you suddenly become a friend with benefits. Normally these are the same people who have problems remembering your exact name: like if your name is Brad they still some times call you Brian. All of a sudden you are the source for all of their answers.

It has been years since your worth has been valued this much....maybe not since the day that your were born and proved to be healthy with all of your fingers and toes. The first natural tendency is to basque in the glory of being something to somebody, when those two seconds are over with, you move on to protecting your time, your property, and your lifting capability. These are all the things expected in exchange for a few nice words and a quick smile. All of a sudden your life is filled with things that are more important than feeding starving children in Calcutta like Mother Theresa...you call this 'washing your hair' or 'house sitting your neighbors elderly cat with bowl problems', also known as anything that sounds plausible and can't be found out to be a bold faced lie.

Some people would say why not just tell the truth and tell your co-worker that you are not interested in using your gas, your time, and your muscle to lug a two seat couch up a flight of stairs because you are waiting for them to evicted instead because of all the other things you have heard coming out of their mouth. As much joy as it is verbally slapping people in the face, house sitting a fake neighbors cat with bowl problems is starting to feel so much better than 'hells bells no way and here's why...'.

Then there are those who can't take a hint, a tip, or a guided tour to the answer of 'no'. They beg, they nag, they stalk, they know when and where you will be because you both work at the same place. This is when you start to feel like Mother Theresa even though you have done nothing to help anyone, you too have fought the devil in the name of oppression and have won the daily battle in the name of good against evil. Based on the amount of whining, begging, and daily pleas of need, you are almost positive that those starving children in Calcutta complained less. This is when you reaffirm to yourself that adults are suppose to take care of themselves and that you are not the only person in the USA with a vehicle that can move a love seat. Now you are just waiting out the siege.
Eventually this person should move on to someone else...theoretically. Or you get promoted because your boss is impressed by your new dedication to your job as way to stay as busy as you publicly claim to be and then really don't have time for any of your former goofing off....maybe you should have moved the couch....at least then you could still goof off.

Big In The U.ASS.A.

Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a replyCartoon Donkey Clipart

We all work hard, some work really hard, and then there are those who work extra hard trying to do things that will let them work smarter and not harder. There is that old joke from the short lived TV show In Living Color, "How many job ya got mon?" Then the other person would respond that he had three jobs. The group would laugh and say that the man was lazy then move onto the next guy who had five jobs. Generally the joke was the most poverty stricken people or the ones fresh off the boat from Ellis Island could only get crappy part time jobs so they always had more than one. Personally I have been known to juggle three jobs at the same time while looking for one good job that never happened.

Everyone tries to make their lives better, everyone tries to work hard enough to find a happy medium between doing and not doing so much that we don't miss out on the some of the happier moments. Many believe in the concept of 'only wanting a happy life', and some just work harder than others to get something they could call happiness....for some the jury is still out on that one.

For one thing I have been seeing a trend in our society, the more free government hand outs people get the unhappier they become. It is no longer about simply getting the hand out but all the other drama created surrounding it. People who do not have jobs need something to fill their lives, so they complain about the free hand outs that they have been given (it wasn't fast enough, it was the wrong color, the person who gave it to them was rude...etc). Now with 40% of the population supporting the other 60% we are breeding whiny self entitled people who think they have money to spend. In reality they have your money to spend, and they want to maximize the worth of that money by getting as much stuff for free with that money. For example, if these government funded babies go out to eat (at the place where I work) then they will complain until whole entrees have been removed from the bill and then will not tip because they are on a set monthly budget. This is the kind of society our government is creating. Or when I am working hard to sell things online, they buy things continually asking for refunds because they wanted the experience of shopping but can't afford a car to go try on clothes since it is cheaper to harass online sellers. I want this on my tombstone 'I like selling to men because they  know what they want. Women are clueless'. I am not complaining about giving refunds, but if you know that you are a 2XL and just want to see if the XL fits, do not waste my time for me to ship it just to let you try it on. (Side note FYI, damaged inventory from fat ladies cannot be sold again and eBay will always take their side and not yours.)

This problem has been growing all over our country, we are the lazy asses of America, we are Big in the U. ASS.A. All of these lazy, find a problem with everything people need a little less drama and a little more hunger in their lives.....a hunger to improve or actual hunger because if you don't work you should not weigh 400lbs. Wither is it at my restaurant job or at home trying to be an entrepreneur, all I want for all the whiny bitchy babies is to leave me alone....but America is now a breeding grounds for the self entitled to my tax dollars. Another true statistic that comes to mind that gives me an odd sense of joy, at least people are being convinced that they are too broke to have babies. Not sure which sector this is working more on, but jobs would limit the breeding of child related hand outs. If you at work you ain't screwing....jus' sayin'. If you have a job then maybe you can tip your waitress.

Innocent Guilty Pleasures

Some times I get teased by my significant other about the the YouTube channels that I subscribe to, and they do not have anything to with inappropriate subjects. Of course I get teased about The Big Bang Theory, Nerdist News, and other geek related topics, but then there are the cooking channels. I say if you want to cook like another culture then cooking channels from these countries would not be a bad idea, especially the French ones (no offense to Jamie Oliver, the naked Chef).

For the last couple of years I have been watching Bruno Albouze make things that even Julia Child did not bother to write about and was done in a way that encouraged locally used vegetables (the only thing missing was pep talk about local sustainability to have me drooling even more). The cute-and-he-knows-it personal chef from France has done a professional job of creating interesting and humorous cooking shows for the modern foodie. Usually it just looks like a bored guy in his kitchen who is trying to be funny or a corny kind of suave that parallels the scenario typical idea of what a Frenchman is. Yes he has a cute accent, no he never has and never will be ugly, yes he stays fit with food from his own garden, and has a couple of episodes where he shows you the quaintness of a French outdoors market with his family. Even Martha Stewart would not mind to take a minute and to see this man at work (not sure if I like the man at work thing as much as I like the concept of his flour-less brownies). Also he got me hooked in the early years of his show when he would dress up like Indiana Jones with a pepper mill....I am the only girl in Texas who owns in Indiana Jones hat.

He inspires me to try and make hard to make dishes that he makes to look easy (he does use a gas stove while I struggle with electric), and not every meal has to only come from the touch of a microwave button. As of this morning he has found my one weak spot, ravioli. I have not sat down and figured out the art of simply wrapping up goo inside of dough in a way that does not make soup when submerged into boiling water. I can make the best fresh pasta in town...just not with filling in the middle. Then this morning I saw the latest video upload: red/green/yellow striped ravioli. I now have a much better plan when I do decide to tackle this masterpiece in culinary art. Think I will use spinach instead, not a big fan of kale, but then I am not very good a blanching greens...must watch more Bruno.

Life Is Art

Art Is Life ... III by SAOUD-ALJEDI

Art is a place that my mind can go to escape and what eyes get lost in reflect what my soul is feeling. There are days when straight lines with slowly fading colors are what I am, a bright cloudy area with a solid border. Art is a place where I can almost play pretend, except what I am playing with and making is real. If I am coloring in a conceptual art piece, I am finding the light and dark spaces and turning them into my own mosaic, I am the creator, I am the owner of my work. Art is life.

Art can be a mathematical rubix cube of exact lines, colors, and calculation of composition. Yet there is a leap of faith and a master touch when the small dots are mixed, layered, and dabbed together making paint on a canvas look like a digital photograph. The bible quotes itself three times saying that man believes himself to be a god (not thee God), but a god who has mastered something in this world. So then it would be fair to say that artists have become the gods of our age, the people who are willing to create so that our souls have something to relate to. This could go back to sheep needing shepherds, leaders and followers, decision makers and those who don't like making decisions; there are clear lines as to who is who and what people are not willing to do. There are the art makers and the art buyers, there are those who make piles of garbage and call it 'art' and then there are those who buy 'art' for millions of dollars. Sometimes the art really was made from recycled materials and some times it is a picture of Kim Kardashian's ass, and it all sells for more money than I make in a week.

A Smiling Pig in a Bikini Sculpture by Cast Art 1993
Art is the spiritual stimulant that we are missing from our daily lives. Art is movies, art is writing, art is naked (or porn, youtube), art is when we rely on other people's genius to replace our own boredom with their ideas. We want to feel something, we watch a movie, we want to find arousal, we watch/read naked things, we want inspiration, we watch Dr. Phil create a 30 minute segment out of psychology, rhetoric, manipulation, and camera angles. We want to rejoice when the dumb teenager agrees to live in a rehab center, we want to pity their weak parents who found the courage to admit their faults on national television, while all of this is spread over the glass television canvas. It may not be the still flat art of Rembrandt, Monet, or Da Vinci, but the only difference is that it is moving at the same speed of the soul and not slowing it down. For this reason I can honestly say that our society is spiritually hyperactive to a point that it will never recover and addicted to itself.

The Friend Zone (you ain't gonna get the girl)

These People Will Never Escape...The Friend Zone

Bobby really liked Sue, Sue knew that Bobby was alive on planet earth, sometimes. Bobby tried to get Sue's attention by giving her small gifts at the appropriate holidays, her birthday, and surprise items that he thought were funny. Sue always said thank you and showed real gratitude, but always told Bobby how great of a 'friend' he was, she never gave him anything but a free smile. It wasn't until Sue had broken up with and hooked up with two other guys that Bobby thought it was time to get out of the 'friend' zone. He finally found the courage to ask Sue exactly what she thought of him, and like most people she didn't have an answer for him. Since she almost never thought of him, or took anything he did seriously, or bothered to remember his long history of kindness towards her; she was being completely honest when she said that she had no idea what she thought about him because she never thought about him. This was a complete shock to Bobby who had tried to do things so that she might one day see him as a real person in her life. He was still invisible in the 'friend' zone, a place where the living are treated as if they are dead by can still communicate with the living.

The friend zone should only be reserved for guys who are gay or male relatives, the rest are in search of dating material and will not stick around if they are put into the friend zone for too long. Guys know what it means when then are sentenced to the friend zone. Some own up to it and know they do not have a snowball's chance in hell with you, while the rest are clueless for months or years until a new object for their affection shows up and you become last weeks meatloaf. The friend zone can be useful in evaluating a person you do or don't want to keep in your life, but when the cooking timer goes off it's time call it the way it is and announce that that turkey is cooked, it's done, it's over, it's finito.

Girls use the friend zone a lot, I know of many guys who have a permanent camping spot in the friend zone of many girls and magically have not turned gay. (No names to protect the exceedingly geeky) At the same time I know girls overly use these words 'just friends' to hide anything from confused emotions, not choosing which emotions to have, hedging their bets to see if there is a better guy out there, or keeping the better guy around until they can get rid of the current toy. I will never say that any of this is moral, respectful, or desirable (the friend zone should not look like a cemetery camping site, because some have bought condos), but it is real and true. It's a sick little game of denial, lack of self control, and gives false hope to those who should be told the truth sooner (you ain't gonna get the girl/guy). These games can be a two way street, but not as often as you might think. Usually the girl thinks she can forever keep a guy at arms length for all her petty needs, while he is just waiting to see when it is time to leave. If you don't give guys good solid reasons to stay they will be gone in the blink of an eye. It only takes a person 1.8 seconds to realize that they are not wanted in the way they are asking to be needed, and it take 5.8 seconds for girls to turn into bitches....just saying.

Wake up my bitches, if guys get smarter faster then they will leave faster, as in they too can forget your phone number, un-friend you on facebook, not go out to eat, and will not take care of your cat for free while you are on vacation alone. Whining and complaining to the nearest set of ears just means you like to whine and you are assuming that the ears want to hear your deafening voice. Ever wonder why girls also leave the friend zones of other girls (no they are not lesbian), they also are worn out by the demands of a self absorbed 'friend'. Guys really do put up with a lot of petty crap, just like girls can put up with a lot of petty crap from guys, but to demand things because a person is a friend of yours without some general kindness in return will get you voted off the island. For the record I don't willingly remember birthdays because I know you will never remember mine, I don't give gifts unless I am cleaning out my garage and do not expect anything in return, and I don't keep people in my life who keep showing up asking for things who are assuming I am their doormat. I need to go wash my hair, all of a sudden I need to join the Peace Corps, just remembered I need to become Catholic so I can be a nun, and call me next week and see if I remember you. (I know you won't bother to remember this either.)

My Little Dictator....I mean Piggy

How many of you have been trained by a guinea pig? How many of you make a noise in your bedroom to here the high pitched squeaks from a guinea pig in the kitchen? This noise is equal to the noises rodents make before a snake eats them, except my rodent is sitting safely in his cage demanding his drug of choice, also known as carrots. Normally he makes those cute little chortling noises that make it seem as if he is talking to you and only his opinion matters. But after six long agonizing hours after he ate his last carrot, he almost climbs up the side of his wire cage while screaming as he is if he is going to die or something trying to get him.
Ignoring his tantrum only lasts for so long. My refrigerator makes a weird deep humming sound, and when you open the door it makes a squeaky sound similar to Piggy. Because my guinea pig lives so close to this box he has learned to pay a lot of attention to it. Also he has learned that most of the time if he hears the sound of the fridge door open then a piece of carrot usually will fall from the sky into his cage. Now even when he is not scheduled to eat and he hears the fridge door open he starts with shrieking and the cage wall climbing. Some of this is my fault, but when a Piggy learns something they don't ever really un-learn it. He has learned the same way Pavlov's dogs learn to drool at the sound of a bell, when I was working more hours the only time the fridge door opened was when I was home and that was only twice a day. So now when I have a mixed schedule or come home early, guess what the little dictator....I mean Piggy wants, he is hooked on carrots like a meth addict.
I have tried other things, broccoli and lettuce have come close to satisfying he demands. Yet there is nothing so funny as throwing a big piece of dikon radish, which is the same hardness and is a root vegetable, and see him sniff it then go right back to begging and complaining that he wants food. I have also discovered that he has this habit of sniffing his food bowl when he is not climbing up the side of his cage. If he gets any fatter, he could play Jaba the Hut in the Lego man version of Star Wars. Normally he looks so cute curled up on side sleeping in the wood chips, but when he hears the fridge door open....lights, curtain, action, it's show time like a scene from Les Miserable of the lonely beggar dying from hunger. It has been only four hours since the last time he was given a carrot longer than his own body and he had dry kibble still in his dish....I hear guinea pig is a delicacy in South American countries.

Hand Made In The USA

Strangest Knitted Creations: Chicken Sweater to Crocheted Bikini

If you think about it not many people make anything any more. They might make their own food, like lunch for work or dinner for when guests come over, but ordinary every day things are always bought from large department stores. Not many people knit their own socks, crochet their own blankets, sew their own pillow cases, or weave their own wash cloths. The idea of being able to take care of oneself and others seems to be such a foreign idea in today's culture.
These concepts are not completely unheard of in the Amish and Prepper communities, but they have a religious purpose for their preferred lifestyle. The average American cannot do for themselves, and if there was ever a meat shortage how quickly so  many of them would be in support of gun ownership and hunting. It's strange to think about how obsessed we are with fashion, but only a select few can actually make a sweater with two needles and some yarn. We have become such a lazy society that no even tries to learn any more, except for then directions to the nearest Walmart.
Most consumers have grown accustomed to the cheap mass produced quality that foreign countries offer, yet at the same time craft supplies are not cheap and they do not sell manufacturer quality supplies to the general public (unless you buy it in $500 lots). To quote Rebecca Alidre Holmes-Anderson, "Most anyone would rather pay $20 at a big box store for a sweater than what it would cost to make it. It’s society’s way of thinking that ‘DIY’ is cheaper than buying the product, and often that’s the case, but with most needle crafts, it’s not.” It usually costs $20 for the yarn alone to make an adult sized sweater, not including labor.
This supply and demand has made so many of us reject the idea that we can take the same tools and supplies to make the same things ourselves for the same price and we can't. Because China is cheaper and the US believes in minimum wage, we no longer try as hard to make things for ourselves. Of course a sweater is cheaper if it only cost a company in China 3 cents an hour to make plus $1.50 in yarn, and $3 in shipping costs to the United States.
The only way I can make a sweater as cheap as that is by going to yard sales and thrift shops, and buying already made sweaters that I will recycle the yarn from. I know of a store where I can buy out of season sweaters for 50 cents, then turn them into things I need, like socks, scarves, and wash clothes. There is a will with a way.

Three Dollars For Three Minutes

The Female Charlie Chan, Ross Hart Resurrected & Suspect #1 (Part 1)

During WWII in Hawaii, on Pearl Street prostitutes worked in a set of rooms that went in a circle called the bull pen, in these rooms they would entertain a soldier for three minutes then move on to the next room. This is where the expression $3 for 3 minutes came from. This also helped to cement the term a 'working girl', because this was no ordinary 8 hour shift.
Very often I will work the morning shift at my part time restaurant job, and most of the customers are elderly and female. No matter how much you bust your butt making everything perfect during their two hour visit they will only tip you three dollars, and they are senile enough to believe they have only been there for three minutes. Performing these tasks day after day really makes prostitution look like an equal opportunity with the same job description, except you can be self employed and work from home, unlike the restaurant business.
Don't get me wrong, not everyday is a bad day, but every time I see those three one-dollar bills sitting on the table or that amount written on the credit card receipt, all I can think of is Pearl Street prostitution as I watch the old ladies hobble out the door. I am also very sure that they were protected enough in their youth and kept so busy with children all their lives that they never got around to learning more about history or where the expression $3 for 3 minutes came from. So now in their ancient age and blindness to all things (like inflation, minimum wage, and cost of living), they revert back to what they think was a good tip when they were younger.....like in 1960.
Don't get me wrong, I like talking with old people and making others happy, but my boss does not like it when I try to only spend three minutes with each table so that I can still pay my bills. It's is such a regular expectation for me to only be given the value of $3 that I have considered doing what other servers have already done...such as screening a table before taking it. There are two servers who I work with who do not wait on people who appear to be over the age of 45, and who do not dress as if they did not buy their clothes from Goodwill. I do agree, this is discrimination, but I get to keep my water hot and my lights on if I stop taking tables that only tip $3 because they are not from 2015.

Searching For Shiny Objects

Once my youngest sister told a boy who had a crush on one of her other sister that the best gift for her would a 'shiny object'. As if anything reflective would be good enough, as if  a pair of fishing lures would be the same as a pair earrings. After considering this bit of sarcasm, I had to agree that a shiny object would be a good gift for our sister, especially since my own gift to her was shiny. Yet I had to reflect on this observation: aren't we all in search of shiny objects? There will always be the girl who squeals over her newly purchased discounted mass produced piece of jewelry, there will always be that person who searches for that ray of sunshine to eliminate the darkness, there will always be that person who finds their inner light so that they will never be dark again.

Still in search of shiny objects that make life a little brighter.
