Art is a place that my mind can go to escape and what eyes get lost in reflect what my soul is feeling. There are days when straight lines with slowly fading colors are what I am, a bright cloudy area with a solid border. Art is a place where I can almost play pretend, except what I am playing with and making is real. If I am coloring in a conceptual art piece, I am finding the light and dark spaces and turning them into my own mosaic, I am the creator, I am the owner of my work. Art is life.
Art can be a mathematical rubix cube of exact lines, colors, and calculation of composition. Yet there is a leap of faith and a master touch when the small dots are mixed, layered, and dabbed together making paint on a canvas look like a digital photograph. The bible quotes itself three times saying that man believes himself to be a god (not thee God), but a god who has mastered something in this world. So then it would be fair to say that artists have become the gods of our age, the people who are willing to create so that our souls have something to relate to. This could go back to sheep needing shepherds, leaders and followers, decision makers and those who don't like making decisions; there are clear lines as to who is who and what people are not willing to do. There are the art makers and the art buyers, there are those who make piles of garbage and call it 'art' and then there are those who buy 'art' for millions of dollars. Sometimes the art really was made from recycled materials and some times it is a picture of Kim Kardashian's ass, and it all sells for more money than I make in a week.
Art is the spiritual stimulant that we are missing from our daily lives. Art is movies, art is writing, art is naked (or porn, youtube), art is when we rely on other people's genius to replace our own boredom with their ideas. We want to feel something, we watch a movie, we want to find arousal, we watch/read naked things, we want inspiration, we watch Dr. Phil create a 30 minute segment out of psychology, rhetoric, manipulation, and camera angles. We want to rejoice when the dumb teenager agrees to live in a rehab center, we want to pity their weak parents who found the courage to admit their faults on national television, while all of this is spread over the glass television canvas. It may not be the still flat art of Rembrandt, Monet, or Da Vinci, but the only difference is that it is moving at the same speed of the soul and not slowing it down. For this reason I can honestly say that our society is spiritually hyperactive to a point that it will never recover and addicted to itself.
